Roberts to apologise for bringing Senate into ridicule with ‘kanagaroo court’ comments

Jul 8, 2021 | 0 comments

All government senators voted on Wednesday in support of adopting a report on Opposition Senator Anil Roberts for remarks he made about the Senate and its president, Christine Kangaloo.

The report was compiled by the Senate’s’s Privileges Committee about remarks Roberts made during two episodes of his Douglar Politics social media programme on February 23 and 26.

In the programmes Roberts referred to the Senate as a “kangaroo court,” in a perceived tongue in cheek jab at Kangaloo.

Government alleged Roberts committed contempt by making statements using satirical subtext to allege the Senate President was biased towards him.

It was noted his actions on the character and conduct of the President was such that it brought the Senate into ridicule.

The report by the Privileges Committee recommended Roberts apologise via personal explanation at the next sitting which will be after Senate returns from recess.

Guidelines will also be issued about the use of electronic devices and social media.

Leader of Government Business Clarence Rambharat said the Opposition did not put forward a proper defence for Roberts’ conduct, adding that they instead made “fairytale” excuses in their contributions.

He also said the attacks on Kangaloo were sexist and malicious.
